A travel brochure many decades ago once said that Puerto Rico is a place as close to Heaven as many of us will ever get. Since then nothing has changed; it is still as beautiful as ever. Borinquen, as the Tainos called their island, is also the home of El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest system.

El Yunque is in my opinion a national treasure to be cherished and protected. This does not mean, however, that it should be enjoyed merely from afar.

I am astonished at its beauty each time I visit this incredible park: the lush vegetation, the wild orchids, the tree ferns as old as time, and of course, the hypnotic waterfalls.

Bathing in the clear and pure water of the pools and waterfalls is a most wonderful experience. My children and grandchildren have also enjoyed the rushing water. It is my hope that many generations into the future will be as fortunate.
