Am I the only voter out here who thinks right-wing conservatives have gone over the edge?
For the last two days on his radio show he’s been attacking a Georgetown University student, Sandra Fluke. Ms. Fluke was originally supposed to testify before a House Committee on birth control but the Republican Chairman of the Committee, Darrell Issa (R-CA) refused to let her.
Leader Pelosi organized a special hearing for her last week, so that she could tell her story. Her testimony was brave and personal–she spoke of a friend who needed birth control for medical reasons but could not get it through their Catholic university. Her friend lost her ovary as a result.1
Rush Limbaugh responded to that testimony by aggressively and viciously calling her a slut (among other horrible names) on his nationally syndicated radio show. And yesterday he doubled down–saying that Ms. Fluke and her college friends should have to post videos of themselves having sex if insurance companies have to cover birth control. So, today we’re joining with allies at RH Reality Check to call on a Rush advertiser–ProFlowers–to cut ties with the show. ProFlowers is a company that caters mostly to women, and they’re already feeling the heat on this (see below). Can you help turn up the pressure and tell ProFlowers that hateful invective attacking women is unacceptable and they must cut ties with Rush Limbaugh immediately? Last night, ProFlowers responded to the growing controversy about their relationship with Rush with a statement saying they would “talk to” Rush Limbaugh’s producers about the feedback they’ve received.3
That’s clearly not enough–calling young women sluts and demanding they post sex tapes because they spoke out on an important women’s health issue is outrageous, offensive and hateful.
One Rush advertiser, Sleep Train Mattresses, has already dropped the show over his comments.4
Ms. Fluke has handled all the hateful rhetoric with tremendous grace, telling reporters that, “This language is an attack on all women, and has been used throughout history to silence our voices.”5
But we need to band together and fight back this right-wing all out war on women. Rush isn’t just talking about Georgetown students. He’s talking about all of us.
On his show, Rush also offered to buy Ms. Fluke and all of her friends aspirin to put between their knees, a remark intended to mean they should keep their legs shut. And here are his exact comments from the last few days.6
“What does it say about the college co-ed Sandra Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex, what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.”
“So Miss Fluke, and the rest of you Feminazis, here’s the deal. If we are going to pay for your contraceptives, and thus pay for you to have sex. We want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch.”
ProFlowers is feeling the pressure and if enough of us speak out we can push them over the edge. No show should be rewarded with advertising dollars for attacking women.
